Forcipomyia is the genus of midge that is largely responsible for cacao pollination worldwide. This is Forcipomyia hardyi, a species endemic to the Hawaiian archipelago. How often does a food crop have a crucial interaction with native Hawaiian fauna? I was just stoked to play with the high end stereoscopes. During a side project, @jannazoll and I discovered its role in pollination of cacao in Hawaii, and ended up doing a short publication in a journal: Proceedings of Hawaiian Entomological Society (2012) 44: 79-81. #cacao #cacaofarm #cacaoscience #beantobar #craftchocolate #entomology #oahu #hawaii #CacaoServices
