Our weekly roundup of chocolate related news, politics and products. See what’s happened every Sunday.
Hershey Boots Vanillin
As part of their quest to eliminate artificial ingredients Hershey is replacing all the vanillin in their recipes with real vanilla. I will eat Kisses™ if they’re left around regardless though I think they taste like a weird cheese.
Cacao Tree Diversifying
People of science are studying the evolution of cacao. This new understanding could create new strains of cacao down the road – ones that could bring new flavors and (probably) resistance to the coming changes in climate.
Wonka Cast Reunites
The (remaining) cast of the original film adaptation of Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory reunited to answer questions 44 years after the film premiered. This is the film to blame the birth of orange Oompa-Loompas on.
Coca farmers turning to cacao
Due to insane growth of cacao as a cash crop coca farmers are now harvesting pods instead of leaves. That and no one is currently shooting anyone else over cacao crops. Knock on wood.
Pocky vs Pepero
11/11 is either Pocky Day or Pepero Day – depending on whether you’re in Japan or South Korea respectively. (It’s a solemn Remembrance Day for citizens of the commonweath.) The disagreement is regarding which country invented the 11/11 “holiday”. (What? No Pretz Day!? It’s a salad in a stick!)
New Flavor of Pejoy
Speaking of Glico: US residents can now enjoy the new Cookies and Cream Pejoy. That and a new Pocky. Really though: aren’t we all just here for the Pejoy?
That’s all the news for this week! See you next Sunday.
