This Week in Chocolate: Nov. 1–8

Our weekly roundup of chocolate related news, politics and products. See what’s happened every Sunday.

Move over Dairy Milk. It turns out you’re no longer the most popular chocolate confection in the UK. That honor now belongs to Maltesers. Deal with it.

Chocolate Fountains: Buyers Guide

Were you impressed with North Korea’s recent tour of their new chocolate fountain adorned airport? Or maybe you’re just needing to douse more things in chocolate? Read this handy buyers guide!

Ecuadorian pruning spree

A government backed initiative to use a counter-intuitive pruning practice will boost cacao yields in Ecuador. This NPR piece highlights what is happening in the “Cradle of Chocolate”. More fine beans sounds good.

Shampoo and Chocolate

Six female cosmonauts recently completed an eight day space simulation and said that they missed their families more than chocolate or shampoo. The article then states that “speculation swirled in the Russian media about whether they would be able to survive without males or cosmetics for a week.” *Facepalm.

Hotel Chocolat has been fined after a worker lost a finger and tore a tendon after being entangled in a chocolate machine. Ahhhhhhhh! I thought Halloween was over!

Start saving those pennies…

The price of cacao is rising and rising thanks to El Niño. Meaning that, in relative terms, cacao is the worlds most expensive commodity when comparing current trading prices to the average price over the last decade. Up 34% percent. Long range vision: double in price by 2020. Damnit, I said Halloween was over!!!

That’s all the news for this week! See you next Sunday.

Being the son of a chocolatier Chris has always enjoyed talking about chocolate as much as he loves eating it. He’s an artist and designer as well as a co-founder of the Chocolate Codex.
