News of the World
Our weekly roundup of chocolate related news, politics and products. Catch up with what’s happening every Sunday.
Week 36: August 30 – September 6
Here is the chocolate related news from the past week! Hope you’re having a great long weekend. Remember: no white chocolate after Labor Day.
Lindt is “hungry for more” in their quest to acquire more chocolate companies. Especially in Brazil where they plan to open to 50 stores.
Speaking of gigantic companies: Nestlé is on blast with accusations of continued child labor use in their Côte d’Ivoire farms. In spite of offering training and education some farms are still using kids for labor. The politics might be complex but no one should be working for free.
Sumatra is plying Belgian investors to come and take advantage of their cacao crop. Perhaps Sumatran cacao will be as well known as their coffee in the relative future. Another delicious bean for Starbucks to burn into charcoal!
Cacao is creating work for Salvadorians that had no previous experience working with the crop. Their Salvadorian Cacao Alliance wants to bring cacao agriculture back to El Salvador.
That’s all for this week. I hope you’re enjoying your long weekend!
Being the son of a chocolatier Chris has always enjoyed talking about chocolate as much as he loves eating it. He’s an artist and designer as well as a co-founder of the Chocolate Codex.
